Nick Barnhill, M.A., LPC, PEL

Nick is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and School Counselor (PEL) who brings 10+ years of experience working within the fields of school counseling, mental health counseling, and college admissions counseling to our clients. Nick earned his B.A. in Psychology in 2016 and his M.A. in School Counseling in 2020 from Concordia University Chicago.

Nick has extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and adults, and his true passion lies in supporting people of all ages as they navigate life’s challenges and strive toward their full potential. He has worked with clients facing trauma, relationship issues, ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, LGBTQ+ and identity concerns, addiction, burnout, behavioral challenges, and emotional dysregulation. As a former school counselor, Nick uniquely understands school-specific issues children and adolescents often face, including interpersonal conflicts, school refusal, executive functioning deficits, academic motivation (helping students discover their “why”), digital literacy and addiction, and bullying. Grounded in the belief that “clients don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” Nick prioritizes building trust and connection from the start. He takes an eclectic yet person-centered approach, meeting clients where they are and empowering them to take the wheel in their therapeutic journey.

In addition to his counseling experience, Nick also has 10+ years of experience coaching baseball at the middle school, high school, and collegiate levels. Nick is extremely passionate about bringing individuals together in a “We vs. Me” mindset, creating a cohesive team atmosphere that can be described best by his favorite athletic “mantra” his college baseball team adopted from U.S. olympic gold medalist Mia Hamm- “I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team. I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion.” Nick currently serves as an Assistant Varsity Baseball Coach/Upper Level Pitching Coordinator at Stevenson High School, as well as the Head Baseball Coach for the Illinois Indians Summer Collegiate Baseball Team (Metro Collegiate League). Nick pitched at Concordia University-Chicago from 2012-2016, working both as a starter and reliever.

In his free time, Nick enjoys spending time with his wife, Maria, and their family and friends. He also enjoys drumming, reading, seeing live music and baseball games, as well as continuing to play baseball as much as he can for a competitive men’s league. Nick is a big believer in maintaining an active lifestyle as a process for promoting personal and collective growth, health, and well-being.
